Identical Greys

Square A seems to be darker than square B, but is that really true? Use the small mask that hangs to the right of the picture to decide.

The two squares A and B actually have the same shade of grey. The red cylinder and the shadowing affect how we experience the differences between the dark and light surfaces in the chessboard pattern.
