The light snakes

The light comes from a projector and is transmitted along thin cables. There is a small lens at the end of each cable. The light bounces or is reflected forwards between the walls of the bent tubes. At the end of each tube, there is a small lens that reflects the light back. Usually light shines straight ahead if it is not refracted.

Where can you see this?

Fibre-optics are common in healthcare where they are used in procedures like keyhole surgery. Keyhole surgery is used to make recovery easier for the patients after their operation, as the wound is small. In certain cases, not even powerful anaesthetic is necessary for the operation.
