Rolling Squares

Can paintings move? It is possible to trick the eye using colours and shadows. The squares seem to roll like waves on the water surface!

Look at the painting. Doesn't the small squares appear to be moving? The impression is reinforced by the shadowing of the squares, the multicoloured background with its diagonal structure, and the lighter yellow colour of the central region.
