When visually impaired people read braille, the cerebral cortex is activated. This is the same part of the brain that is activated by images. Visually impaired people also have better skills for determining the frequency of a sound and find out where it is coming from. They are better at interpreting the acoustic environment, and can use it to orientate themselves more than those without visual impairments.
