Spinning

Here you can mimic a figure skater making a pirouette on ice. The speed falls as you stretch out your arms or legs, and it increases as you withdraw them in towards the pillar, as your mass becomes concentrated at the centre of rotation. When you get down from the spinning support, you may feel that you continue to spin, but in the opposite direction. The fluid in the semi-circular canals and the gelatine-like substance in compartments known as the “utricle” and the “saccule” in your ears continue to rotate due to viscosity, even though you are standing still. This means that the brain receives signals that you are still spinning. Your eyeballs also continue to move for a period after the spin.
